This semester I have learned about PBIS in schools in my Education media apps course. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. According to the PBIS web site “PBIS is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students.”
PBIS is a three tiered system, as seen in the picture below. Tier one is school wide students are given the information and are supported as a group. Tier two is small groups instruction for those students who may need a little more reinforcement. Tier three is more intensive and meant for one on one instruction. The goal is to always help students and bring them back to tier one.
PBIS is impacting education because PBIS addresses the behavioral needs of students. Addressing the behavioral needs of students can help teachers with classroom management and help the students become well rounded members of the community. Teachers should care about PBIS because the program helps students grow. Helping students grow is the goal for many teachers. I have seen the PBIS program in many elementary and middle school. What techniques are used in High Schools?
