What I’ve Learned

Blogging was a new experience for me, one I suggest everyone tries.  While I have been blogging this semester I have also been following some of my classmates’ blogs.  Here are the best things I have learned form them.

  1. Stephanie’s blog had some great tips on how to use Pinterest to collaborate.  I’ve never thought about (or known how to) share  what I found on Pinterest with other educators.
  2. Sydney’s post on 5 Things to Keep in Mind When Implementing Technology was a good reminder.  It reminded me that even though technology should be part of the classroom teachers still need to be aware of outside factors
  3. In Megan’s blog on the SAMR model, one point that really hit home for me was when she said “With the SAMR Model, history can come to life.”  I know the SAMR model can help with the incorporation of technology into the classroom, but bring it to life is something I didn’t think about.

Kahoot!

 

Tool for Formative Assessment

Kahoot is a collection of questions on specific topics. Each Kahoot is created by the teachers.  Students, an unlimited number, are asked in real-time to answer the question.  Students are then able to see the answers and how well they are doing.  For each question in a quiz students receive point.  Kahoot creates a fun and game-like learning environment. There are 3 types of Kahoots quiz, pulls, and surveys.   I think the quizzes will make a fun formative assessment review game I as the instructor will be able to see how each student is doing and where we need to spend more time. Kahoot also can help prep for standardized test since each question is timed.

Guess Who?

So this post will be a little different, instead of me talking to you I’ve ask my friend, Jesse to write something.  I asked Jesse, What he wished his educators would have done and taught him in high school?  Here’s what Jesse had to say.

“I wish they would teach more different languages then just Spanish. My family originated from Germany and my Grandpa could speak German. I would have enjoyed learning German if my school offered it.”–Jesse

Help with communication and collaboration

So I’m really excited to tell you about the online whiteboard I found.  The white board is Twiddla.  Twiddla is a web- based meeting playground. The website allows for you to write and draw on websites, graphics, photos, documents or brain storm ideas.  You can also be communicating thru audio.  You’re not by yourself you are with multiple people. No plug-ins, downloads, or firewall and its free! Teacher get Twiddla free and there is a free 30 day trial.  This tool is something I would use if I was absent from the day and I still want to teach the student.  I could  be away from the school and ask students question.  Students could then answer on a smart board and I could see how well their understanding the material.  Twiddla can also be helpful when students need help outside of the classroom and you can’t meet face to face. Using TPack

TPack stands for Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge. TPack “is a framework to understand and describe the kinds of knowledge needed by a teacher for effective pedagogical practice in a technology enhanced learning environment.” The best way to understand Tpack is by using a Venn diagram, as shown below.  The three circles represent technological, pedagogical, and content Knowledge.  Many instructors are strong in the content knowledge because it is a subject area that you are very interested in and knows a good deal about.  The pedagogical knowledge is an instructor’s knowledge on how to teach and make the information more accessible .  The pedagogical knowledge is taught to soon to be educators in college.  The pedagogical knowledge will also grow with time and experience. The technological knowledge is knowing what technology is out there and what will benefit the students the most (using the SAMR model).  This is an important part in achieving TPack.  Not having all three parts of TPack is like not adding the chocolate chips to chocolate chip cookies.  You will still have a cookie but not the best chocolate chip cookie.  Missing a part of TPack will still be and educator but the best educator.

PBIS

This semester I have learned about PBIS in schools in my Education media apps course.  PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. According to the PBIS web site “PBIS is a framework or approach for assisting school personnel in adopting and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated continuum that enhances academic and social behavior outcomes for all students.”

PBIS is a three tiered system, as seen in the picture below.  Tier one is school wide students are given the information and are supported as a group.  Tier two is small groups instruction for those students who may need a little more reinforcement. Tier three is more intensive and meant for one on one instruction.  The goal is to always help students and bring them back to tier one.
